Although the season is underway, if your favorite team is playing as bad as mine is, then you may be looking for other forms of baseball entertainment to reprieve you from the season already.
While watching the Reds get plowed by the Cards like a little kid in a Penn State lockerroom, I came up with an idea... Thus, the Baseball Movie Awards were born. The BMA's if you will.
If you love movies like I do, then I'm sure you especially love watching baseball movies (both the good and the bad). A good baseball movie is hard to come by though; much like finding a blood diamond. Unfortuanely, Hollywood is usually too busy pumping out Katherine Heigel movies like a Model-T factory to get around to making a good baseball flick. So when a good one comes along, it should be celebrated.
Therefore, I have taken it upon myself to create the world premiere of the BMA's. Please enjoy, and feel free to chime in with any disagreements, fun facts, or anectdotes. Now without further ado, the envelope please...

Least Realistic Baseball Movies Ever
Winner - Summer Catch
- Reasons: I don't know why I thought a movie starring Freddie Prinze Jr., Matthew Lillard, and Wilmer Valderama portraying the most promising
young baseball prospects in the country would be convincing. Although Brittney Murphy was very convincing as a person who is still alive.
Runner Up - A League of Their Own
- Reasons: You know why girls can't play a game of baseball? Because it's hard to fit 18 girls into one kitchen.
(And yes, I do know this movie is inspired by real events).
Also in Consideration - Field of Dreams
- Reasons: If you miraculously traveled back from the afterlife, would you really go to Iowa?
Also in Consideration - Angels in the Outfield
- Reasons: Ghosts don't like orphans.
Also in Consideration - Mr. 3000
- Reasons: Yet another movie about a dead person playing baseball.... Also, really, Bernie Mac and baseball? Was Andy Dick not available? Couldn't have casted a believable person Hollywood?
Also in Consideration - Hardball
- Reason: So you mean to tell me that Keanu Reeves is going to surf into the Chicago projects to coach baseball and he wasn't the one that got shot in the movie. C'mon Hollywood.
Also in Consideration - Major League III Back to the Minors
- Reason: Yeah, a pro team is going to have such an inferiority complex that it will challenge its minor league team to a game to prove that they are better.
Also in Consideration: The Natural
- Reason: Okay, let's say Roy Hobbs really is the best player ever, and he can really hit 600 foot bombs that smash into the lights.
Is that baseball really going to cause a firework display that would make Disney World green with envy? I think not.
Suprisingly left out: Little Big League. Yeah, it could happen.
Worst Baseball Movie Ever
Winner - Ed
- Reason: I can believe a monkey playing baseball, that's not the issue. But really? Joey from Friends? C'mon, that's a little far fetched, dontcha think?
Runner Up - The Scout
- Reasons: I'll give you three. Brendan Frasier, Brendan Frasier, and Brendan Frasier.
Also in Consideration: The Fan, Mr. 3000, Air Bud 7th Inning Fetch, and Bang the Drum Slowly.
And now, what we have all been waiting for. This award was very hard to choose from. There were so many good choices that it was hard to distinguish one as being better than any others. Nonetheless, here is my crack at the Best Baseball Movies of All Time.
